Getting lice can be devastating, especially for kids.  They spread quickly and if you don’t address the problem immediately, it can take sometimes weeks to get rid of them.

Many people have some crazy recipes to get rid of lice, everything from gasoline to using a lot of chemicals.  We want to kill lice but not ourselves, so let’s stick with a natural solution.  I will tell you right now that bugs, ants and lice do NOT like peppermint.  I wrote about my experiment before, but ants actually try to get away from it.

I’ve come up with a shampoo to combat these little enemies that I’m sure you’ll like a whole lot better than the gasoline treatment.  You will need to buy or dig up castille soap, vinegar, peppermint, thyme and tea tree oils.  To make it really good, if you can find paw paw fruit, I would mix that right in as well including the seeds.

My Home Made Recipe:

  1. Mix well the paw paw fruit and grind the seeds together.
  2. Combine 1/2 c. of castille soap.
  3. Add 1 c. of vinegar.
  4. Use 20 drops of peppermint essential oil
  5. 10 drops of thyme essential oil
  6. 10 drops of tea tree (melaluca) oil
  7. Mix well

Application Instructions:

Wash hair first if you’d like, then rinse and apply the above mixture.  Make sure to thoroughly apply in your hair. Leave in for at least 60 minutes or more and use a shower cap to protect your hair.  You may want to leave the recipe in your hair over night as well.  After application, rinse thoroughly in the shower.  Dry and comb hair with lice comb and remove nits or remaining lice.  You will probably have to repeat this process for at least a week.

I recommend that you use the peppermint and castille soap in your laundry as well.  Make sure to wash frequently all sheets and clothing.  This is not an easy task to get rid of these little buggers.  If you are really not into making your own lice shampoo, here is a great option as well.  Good luck!

Believe it or not, it’s back to school time already and how many of us moms want to be prepared? All of us!  When it comes to Back to School Health Tips there are some simple basics to keeping the family healthy to ward off those pesky germs.  My philosophy of course is Prevention is Better Than Cure, so why not try to prevent illness before you get it?

Years ago as a third-grade teacher, I would have to teach my students the proper etiquette of not spreading germs… like how to avoid sneezing on other people, washing hands before lunch after touching rails, desks and bathroom handles and not sharing combs because of lice. It wasn’t easy and I had to remind them frequently, but it did pay off.

Here is a short list of what mom or dad can do at home to help keep the family healthier:

My Back to School Health Tips

  1. Take Non-GMO Vitamins to keep your resistance up so that you can fight off those germs. Here’s a good vitamin for kids and here is an option for adults.  You may even want to take extra vitamin C during cold season.
  2. Washing Your Hands always before you EVER put anything in that mouth.  That goes along with touching your face, nose and eyes as well because germs spread much easier and faster this way. I don’t really recommend any artificial-ingredient hand sanitizers, but you can easily make your own hand sanitizer using essential oils by following this recipe: Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer
    • 3 TBSP Aloe Gel
    • 1 TBSP Water
    • 1/8 tsp Vitamin E
    • 5-7 drops of thieves or onguard essential oil

    Mix all ingredients together and funnel into a small container.

  3. Eat Well.  What does eating well mean?  That’s a loaded question, but if I could give you a short definition it would go like this….Stay away from all GMOs including grains, soy, canola. To learn more about GMOs, read my posts here. One great tip that I have learned is that if you eat organic bread or products, you don’t need to eat gluten-free (or at least this has worked for me). Eat LOTS of fruits and vegetables and try to avoid boxed or pre-packaged items.  I know this is difficult, especially for moms of small children, but trust me your kids will be healthier for it.
  4. Get Enough Sleep.  If you don’t get enough sleep, your resistance will be down and you will be more apt to get sick.  8 hours is a nice goal to shoot for and for kids in college, listen to mom because she loves you 😉
  5. Use a Diffuser.  In order to keep everyone from getting sick or spreading at home, I like to use a diffuser with bacteria-fighting essential oils.  This is especially great for the classroom, hospital room or the college dorm.
  6. Don’t share food and drink.  I can tell my kids all the time not to share, but they still don’t listen.  Maybe this video will help.
  7. Most Importantly…Be prepared! So expect that once in a while you will get something, but if you catch it in time, you can often keep the illness at bay.  We are always prepared ahead of time in my house with either Oil of Oreganol which I love or Swedish Bitters which are bitter!! Oil of Oreganol used topically for strep throat is wonderful.  Just put castor or olive oil on first and then the oil at least several times the first day.  Essential oils on the bottom of the feet also absorb into the blood stream quickly.  As always, consult your physician first.  I also make an all natural vapor rub for the chest if you do get a cold.  Check it out here. Eat More Fish! – Home Remedies For Mom

We’ve heard the phrase, “Eat more Chicken,” but how about “Eat more Fish?”  Fish, but especially Alaskan Salmon has a lot of great nutrients in it such as the Omega 3s: DHA and EPA which are extremely healthy for the brain. But what we must know is that all fish are not equal, so what’s a mother to do? 

According to Dr. Sears, fish can be considered a top super food, read more on why he says this first. 

Here are some top reasons for eating quality fish:

  1. It builds better brains and there is a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s, dementia and cognitive decline.
  2. It helps the heart to be healthier by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, blood clots and even incidence of heart attacks.
  3. It is good for the gut and the endocrine system which means that the risk of inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer is reduced.
  4. It improves the eyesight and lessens age-related disease.
  5. It build better bones and can reduce osteoporosis.
  6. It can improve immunity.
  7. It can help alleviate asthma.
  8. It reduces the chance of cancer, especially colorectal and prostate.
  9. It can help skin issues.
  10. It may help with weight control as well.

A 2008 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that out of 254 volunteers that were tested for Omega 3 (EPA levels), the participants with the highest levels, lived the longest. (Sears p.192)

How much Omega 3 or fish should we eat daily? 

The International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids and the US National Institutes of Health agree that we need at least 600 milligrams per day of Omega 3s, which include DHA and EPA.  That means that if you eat 6 ounces of wild salmon twice a week, you would consume the equivalent of 600 milligrams a day.

Alaskan caught salmon can be expensive, so if you can’t do that every week, maybe buy an Omega 3 oil or vitamin to take daily.  Remember if you are buying salmon, I do not recommend purchasing any from the Pacific waters close to Japan or from China.  Because of the nuclear fallout years ago, coastal waters are still being affected.  Also, there are many farmed fish coming from China and farmed fish are often GMO or genetically modified–not good! What fish not to eat

There are also other fish that are good for you, but the salmon does have the highest ratios of DHA and EPA in them.  Another rule of thumb, according to Dr. Sears is that “the bigger the fish, the longer it lives; and the more predatory the species, the more mercury and other pollutants it is likely to contain.”  Shark and swordfish are at the top of his list.  I personally do not recommend no-gill fish such as catfish, ground feeders such as tilapia, lobster and shrimp; and tuna, seaweed, kelp or any other fish that are from contaminated waters.  When eating fish and seafood, you have to really do your homework these days unfortunately.  I just think the bodies of water, including our rivers and lakes are just not as clean as they were even 50 years ago–hopefully I’m wrong.

Hidden Toxins in Your Vitamins and Food

Can some of the vitamins and supplements that you take on a daily basis have hidden toxins within them?  How clean really are your supplements?  I found this question hard to answer as I did the digging.  It is always a good policy to know where your vitamins are being sourced and whether you trust the company and distributor of your products.  Do you know that the majority of vitamin C sold is ascorbic acid or a synthetic version?  It is also my understanding that most of it is sourced from China and is actually a GMO version!!  I find this unbelievable as I try very hard to avoid all GMOs.

Not only do some supplements have genetically modified ingredients, but often there are artificial sweeteners, artificial colors and other artificial additives as well.

Toxin Testing

I think testing is very important, but very few companies do independent testing with public disclosure.  Consumer Labs  says it is their mission to identify the best health and nutritional products through independent testing.  You can become a member to get their results on some nutritional products as they mainly do comparative product testing. 

However, I have not found a source currently who looks at the purity of the product besides Mike Adams, the Health Ranger at his Consumer Wellness Center Labs. According to Adams, there could be heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides and even pharmaceuticals in your vitamins and food.  These toxins he says can cause all kinds of disease.  He writes more about his findings in his book, Food Forensics.  See his book promo below:

In this first chapter, he writes how he analyzed mangosteen powder from Thailand and it contained 11 ppm of lead.  Keep in mind, that there is no safe level of lead according to the CDC.  Adams, after publishing his findings was then blacklisted from several importers.  He continued his investigations and what he found was even more amazing.  Over and over again his lab found large quantities of lead, aluminum, tungsten, mercury, arsenic and other toxins in supplements, every day foods, superfoods, dog food, and even organic food!

So What Do I Do Now?

  1. Be informed. Toxic exposure has become overwhelming today.  Not only are we exposed to toxins in our food, but in our environment as well.  Water, air and soil now have to be considered;  as well as the chemicals we put on our bodies has to be taken into account.
  2. Avoid toxins as much as possible.  Will we avoid them all?  Definitely not, but strive to avoid them as much as humanly possible. And definitely stay away from products whose ingredients you don’t know or can’t pronounce (ie. hexane, carrageenan, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, MSG, hydrogenated oil, artificial colors and other fillers)
  3. Eat organic, unprocessed and whole food supplements and stay away from known GMOs.
  4. Know your supplier.  Often I research the companies before buying my supplements.  I even put their address into the search engine.  More often than not, I find that the address of many of these “companies” are a warehouse or even just a small office.  I never buy from these store fronts.
  5. Read reviews.  Although reviews can tell you a lot about the product, many times consumers still do not understand enough about the product source.
  6. Look for manufactures that are ISO 9000, ISO 9001 and NSF certified.  To get these certifications, a manufactures has to submit to rigorous testing.  MegaFoods is one such company.
  7.  American Nutraceutical Association also has great information on the latest research for consumers.

The bottom line is that today we have no choice but to be vigilant because there can be so many hidden toxins in our food and supplements. It takes a lot of work to be a health conscious individual today, but in the long run it will pay off.

Fibromyalgia is real, and for many it is extremely painful.   Are there any natural remedies for fibromyalgia that really work?

According to Mayo Clinic, “Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculus-skeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals. Symptoms sometimes begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no single triggering event.”

Studies suggest that “…That the link between chronic stress and the subsequent development of fibromyalgia can be explained by one or more abnormalities in neuroendocrine function. There are several such abnormalities recognized that both occur as a result of chronic stress and are observed in fibromyalgia.” (Arthritis Res Ther. 2004;6(3):98-106. Epub 2004 Apr 7)  In other words, continual stress may create the onset of this disease.

Many of us steer clear from synthetically made remedies, so then what are our options for this life-changing disease?  First off, seeing a physician first is always preferred to screen deficiencies and conditions even though there is no specific diagnostic test for fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which has some similar symptoms.

There are some things that you can do yourself to alleviate the pain, here are possible natural treatments:

  1. Know that STRESS and HORMONES plays an integral role in fibromyalgia.  Balancing your adrenal, thyroid, and ovarian hormones can make a remarkable difference in your pain, and this is where we usually need professional help.
  2. Support your neuroendocrine function with adaptogens or herbs that cause homeostasis like Ashwagandha and Astragalus.
  3. Change your diet to organic and NON-GMO food.  The bottom line is that there is no way to get on the road to recovery unless you do.
  4. Support yourself with basic nutrients, especially: Vitamins B, C & D; Omega 3s and selenium.
  5. Exercise.  It keeps the body moving and oils the body machine.
  6. Calm yourself.  If you’re anything like me, I have to really work on this.  I pray and meditate on the Lord, try to get decent sleep at night and I usually try to avoid caffeine. Oh, and can I mention… Forgive, whoever, whatever.  Sometimes unresolved memories upset our whole metabolic system, really!
  7. Consider the Rife frequency for fibromyalgia. Now if you’ve never heard of therapy using frequencies, read more about what it is from Science Daily. The mouth is so important to our health and I think most of us really don’t understand why good hygiene means better health.  So today let’s focus on what is natural oral health, but first…

Research proves that oral disease can contribute to other diseases, some of which includes: cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and diabetes.  You are 10 times more likely to experience a fatal heart attack if you have gum disease. Because of  an unbalanced microflora or bacteria in the mouth, one could have a 700 percent higher risk for Type 2 diabetes. And John Hopkins researchers found the link between oral health and cancer in this study. Wow!

What is good natural oral health?

Good natural oral health is just plain NATURAL!  We stay away from introducing chemicals or large amounts of sugar into our bodies.  We create good flora and put it back into our system.

Here is a review of some of the ways to do away with the bad bacteria:

  1. Stay away from silver filings and root canals as much as possible.  These metals such as mercury and other foreign materials which are toxins can eventually leak into your bloodstream via mouth absorption.
  2. Use only natural toothpaste and whitening products and definitely stay away from the fluoride.  Read more about the dangers of fluoride here.
  3. Oil pulling or swishing coconut oil in the mouth for about 5 minutes (then spitting it out) is a therapy that can heal cells, tissue and organs as the body gets rid of its toxic waste such as bacteria, Streptococcus and Candida.   There has also been evidence that it can minimize tooth decay and cavities and make teeth brighter.
  4. Rinse with hydrogen peroxide occasionally to help thwart gum disease.  Btw, I don’t really recommend any mouthwashes with chemicals.
  5. Use cloves or clove oil with any mouth infections.  Cloves numb mouth pain naturally and also disinfect the mouth.
  6. Take garlic capsules before you go to the dentist or a clove of garlic when you return.  Anytime you get your teeth cleaned or fixed, there is a ton of bacteria leaked into your gut.  Prepare yourself before you go.  You’ll find that you are less susceptible to colds during that time as well because bacteria lowers your immune system for a time.
  7. Taking a probiotic to improve your good gut bacteria is smart as well.
  8. Most importantly!  Watch what you put into your mouth.  Sugary drinks and desserts can help to decay teeth fast, not to mention messing with your gut.

Good natural oral health takes work, but in the long run you will be healthier for it!

Does Bee Pollen Benefit Arthritis and MS?

I was talking to my local beekeeper the other day and asked him if he suffers from arthritis.  He told me no, and I have since learned that he’s not the only beekeeper that claims this.  I thought to myself, “What makes these beekeepers different?” Could it be the bee pollen?

Arthritis is a terrible disease that often includes very severe pain along with inflammation of the joints, stiffness and a decreased range of motion.  Apitherapy, or the use of bee products such as bee pollen, honey, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom to benefit health is currently used in the U.S., but very minimally. However, back in the 1990s former U. S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) was so convinced of the benefits of bee pollen after his allergies were as he said “cured,” that he helped to create the National Center on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the Office of Alternative Medicine in the National Institute of Health.  The science of these bee products are also supported and used in other countries such as China, Korea, Russia, Egypt and Greece.

What is Pollen?

Pollen is the male seed of a flower that is necessary to fertilize a plant.  When a honeybee arrives at a flower, she sits on the stamen and scrapes off the loose pollen.  She moistens it with a bit of honey to create those golden granules of pollen, which by the way cannot be duplicated in a laboratory.

 Dr. Axe states that the Chemical Composition of Bee Pollen includes:

  • 30 percent digestible carbohydrates
  • 26 percent sugars (mainly fructose and glucose)
  • 23 percent protein (including 10 percent of essential amino acids)
  • 5 percent lipids (including essential fatty acids)
  • 2 percent phenolic compounds (including flavonoids)
  • 1.6 percent minerals (including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, silicon and selenium)
  • 0.6 percent water-soluble vitamins and acids (including B1, B2, B6 and C)
  • 0.1 percent fat-soluble vitamins (including vitamins A, E and D)

What about the research?

There is not a lot of bee research about the medicinal value here in the U. S., but this supplemental article to the book, The Art of Getting Well and Bee Pollen:  The Perfect Food is supported by over 20 professionals including doctors and Royden Brown, the creator of Aller-Bee-Gone (Allergies and Bee Products).  It’s an interesting read as the article speaks to all the different ailments that were improved by bee pollen.

Here is another finding and in this case is for Multiple Sclerosis patients entitled: An Evidence-Based Systematic Review of Bee Pollen by the Natural Standard Research Collaboration (PDF Download Available)

rSummary: In a preliminary study, bee pollen, as part of multi-bee product therapy, was found to decrease symptoms of multiple sclerosis.  Well-designed clinical trials are required before recommendations can be made in this field.  rEvidence (combination study): Apitherapy (including bee venom, bee pollen, and honey) improved symptoms in 92 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Three 20-day courses of bee venom 4.5 mg daily was administered over one year. Honey 30 g twice daily (orally) was administered with bee pollen 10 g daily for six months. No other therapy was given. The forms of MS in this group were cerebrospinal (70 patients) and cerebellar (22 patients). Stage I to II patients represented 72.8% and stage III to IV patients were 27.2%. Clinical improvement was seen in 100% of patients and 72.8% of disabled patients were able to return to work (Krivopalov-Moscvin, 1997). In this study the criteria used to determine clinical improvement and improvement type were not cited and no control group was mentioned.

Is Bee Pollen Safe?

Bee pollen seems to be safe for most people, at least in short term.  I would always consult your physician first, especially if you are allergic to pollen.  An allergic reaction to bee products can include:  shortness of breath, hives, swelling and anaphylaxis!  Doctors do not recommend bee pollen for pregnant or breast feeding women.  Bee pollen may cause increased bleeding if taken with certain blood thinners like warfarin.

Where to Buy Bee Pollen

If you can, try to buy pollen collected from unpolluted sources: no GMOs, no pesticides, herbicides, and as far away from industrial pollution as possible.  Try to purchase organic when possible and only from a reputable dealer.

Why go organic?

Many personal care products contain to harmful contaminants in their ingredients.  Hair dyes, fragrances, soaps, shampoos, cosmetics are all affected by these contaminants if they are not derived from truly natural ingredients.  Anything that is labeled as a “fragrance” can contain tons of chemicals because they are not required to list them all.  Cosmetics are poorly regulated and many are made from untested chemical and synthetic ingredients.
